I wasn’t sure anyone loves fall as much as I do. Then I checked out my Instagram feed and saw that everyone loves fall as much as I do 🙂 I love the feeling of the season changing, the world becomes cozier, pumpkin-flavored everything, leaves changing, scarves, OH I love scarves. But here in San Diego, we don’t get a lot of any of that except for the pumpkin craziness and pretending that it’s chilly so we can wear fall fashion.
Luckily we have two places within driving distance where you can get your fill of the fall season. Have yourself a jolly fall getaway in Lake Arrowhead or Julian!
Fall Getaway: Julian
Image via La Couronne
Julian is a teeny tiny old gold mining town about one hour outside of San Diego. It feels almost like you are transported back to another time, and worlds away from the hustle & bustle of Southern California. Every time I go here I feel calm and relaxed. You can walk around the entire town in about one hour, but you’ll want to stay much longer because there are fun stores, restaurants and events to fill your little fall-crazy heart’s desire!
What To Do In Julian
Go Apple Picking!
Usually the u-pick season opens in September and closes in November. Call ahead if you go this year – since there’s been such a bad drought it has affected apple picking season.
Eat Apple Pie.
Do I have to tell you twice? Julian is famous for it’s apples and naturally, it’s apple pie. Tons of restaurants in Julian will have signs and almost all of them are superb!
Stop in the Mom & Pop Shops.
I love to just poke around the cute little mom & pop stores, and the antique stores. So cute and fun!
Buy Locally made Apple Cider, Apple Butter, and Pumpkin Butter.
Because it’s delicious.
Consider Staying at a Bed & Breakfast.
I did this one time with J and it was so fun! It was a quirkly little B&B and we loved every second of it. We truly felt like we were worlds away from San Diego in a cozy getaway.
Stop by Meghini Winery.
It’s an adorable winery just a short drive from the city center.
Visit the Town Hall.
This is where you will often find fun city happenings like community arts & crafts sales, plays, etc.
Fall Getaway: Lake Arrowhead
Lake Arrowhead is a quiet, gorgeous lake town in the San Bernardino Mountains. It’s most popular in the Summer and Winter, but the Fall has the foliage with warm days and cool nights. Here you’re surrounded by huge Evergreen trees and a glistening lake, and it’s hard not to feel relaxed.
What To Do In Lake Arrowhead
Visit the Lake Arrowhead Village
This is kind of the “heart” of the town. There’s a selection of stores, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, pharmacy, and some entertainment. It’s fun to just walk around and explore. It’s on the edge of the lake too, so it’s a pretty place to be.
Rent out a Cozy Home on Airbnb or VRBO
There are hotels, resorts, spas, etc. And they are nice and cozy! But I prefer to rent a house and have it to myself. It just feels a little more warm to me. There’s tons of rental options and you can find ones as close to or far away from the Village as you like!
Or, Go Camping!
If you’re like me and you like to go camping where there are still amenities (like toilets, showers, etc.) North Shore Campground is only about three miles from the Village. So, while you won’t feel totally “out in the wild” you will still get a fresh, outdoor taste of fall
Enjoy Dining & Theater at the Tudor House
The Tudor House is well-known for it’s dining and entertainment options. All year long (and right now, during fall!) there are tons of shows, concerts, sketches, etc
Cozy Up at Home with Wine and Cheese
Why not just stay in, light a fire, and have some wine and cheese? That sounds like a heavenly fall evening to me!
